What Is Minimal Intervention Wine?

The Art of Minimal Intervention Winemaking at Buckel Family Wine.

At Buckel Family Wine, we believe that great wine begins in the vineyards. This philosophy guides our approach to minimal intervention winemaking, where our goal is to let the grapes speak for themselves, showcasing the unique character of each growing season and the terroir (climate, soil, topography, geography, human influence, microbiome) of our vineyards.

What Is Minimal Intervention Winemaking?

Minimal intervention winemaking is a practice that involves doing as little as possible to the wine throughout its life—from harvesting and fermentation to aging and bottling. This approach is rooted in our winemaker’s desire to create wines that are a true expression of the grapes, the farmers, and the environment/land in which they grow. It’s about allowing the natural qualities of the fruit and terroir to shine, without relying on manipulation to the wine or the addition of artificial agents.

Why We Choose Minimal Intervention

Our commitment to minimal intervention at Buckel Family Wine is driven by a deep respect for the land where we grow grapes, recreate, and call home, in addition to our passion for crafting wines that reflect a sense of place. Here’s why this approach is so important to us:

  1. Expressing Terroir: We want our wines to tell the story of the vineyard—its location, soil composition, and aspect, as well as the unique conditions of the growing season. Was it a hot summer or a cool one? Did we have an early spring or a late frost? Every year is different, and we want our wines to showcase individualities. This depth and complexity can only be achieved by allowing the grapes to express their natural characteristics which is the basis for minimal intervention winemaking.

  2. Balanced Winemaking: One of the most critical decisions we make is determining the right time to harvest. By carefully balancing the natural sugars and acids in the grapes at the time of picking, we can minimize the need for adjustments later on. This means we use fewer additives, like sulfites, during the aging process, which results in a purer, more authentic wine with a higher standard of craftsmanship.

  3. Natural Clarification: For our red wines, we rely on gravity to naturally clarify the wine during barrel aging. This gentle process allows the wine to develop complexity and depth without the need for filtration or fining agents, which can strip the wine of its natural flavors and aromas which make them unique.

The Alternative: Additives in Winemaking

Legally, winemakers can add up to 52 different agents to wine, including sugars, acids, tannins, and other additives approved by the United States federal government. These additives are often used to manipulate the wine’s flavor, texture, and appearance, ensuring consistency from year to year or taste season to season. This approach can result in wines that lack the distinctive character and authenticity that comes from minimal intervention, not to mention wines that can leave you hungover or not feeling your best (too much sugar).

We reject this style of winemaking. We don’t add any of these agents to our wines, and instead, we embrace the natural variability of each vintage, crafting wines that are as unique as Colorado’s seasons, people, land, and environmental qualities.

The Uniqueness of Colorado

Colorado's rugged landscape, high altitude, and diverse climate create a unique environment for winemaking that perfectly complements our minimal intervention philosophy. Our vineyards, often situated at higher elevations, experience intense sunlight, cool nights, and a shorter growing season, all of which contribute to the development of distinct flavor profiles in our grapes. This challenging yet rewarding terroir allows us to craft wines that are not only a true reflection of Colorado,  but also possess a vibrancy and depth that can only come from this distinctive setting. From Palisade to Cortez and Dolores, our minimal intervention winemaking brings out the natural essence of our vineyards.

The Result: Wines with Character and Depth

By practicing minimal intervention, we create wines that are vibrant, expressive, and deeply connected to the place they come from. Each bottle is a snapshot of the unique Colorado vineyard and the year in which it was made, offering a taste of our land and a reflection of the care and attention we (along with the farmers and harvesters) bring to every step of the process.

When you enjoy a glass of Buckel Family Wine, you’re not just tasting wine—you’re experiencing the culmination of a year’s worth of work in the vineyard and winery, the nuances of the growing season, the people behind the process, Colorado’s unique terroir, and the purity of the grapes themselves. This is the essence of minimal intervention winemaking, and it’s a philosophy we’re proud to share with you in every bottle.
